Oregon CIS was designated as Oregon's career information delivery system by Governor John Kitzhaber on June 15, 2001, in Executive Order No. 01-08.

Oregon CIS was the first state-based computerized career information system in the nation.  As such it was the model for a national initiative by the US Department of Labor in the 1970's. Now most of the fifty states have some type of career information delivery.

Oregon CIS is an outreach center of the College of Education and is a designated operations fund within the University of Oregon financial system.

Oregon CIS is self-supporting. Schools and agencies that use CIS are members of the CIS consortium, paying an annual fee for the information, delivery systems, and user support. CIS operates on a July 1 through June 30 fiscal year. (Copies of the most recent fiscal year-end financial statements may be obtained by contacting the Oregon CIS Accountant.)

Oregon CIS spawned the national office of CIS, now called intoCAREERS which is also housed at the University of Oregon.  intoCareers staff do the research and programming for systems in 17 states (Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin).

CIS products are used in about 900 locations in Oregon, over 725 of them K-12 schools.

Almost 300,000 Oregonians had access to CIS information last year.

The Internet version of CIS is available to consortium member sites for use by students and clients at home.  Check with your school, college, or agency career center to see if this service is available to you.
